The Cats Who Run the Internet

By Laine Bulakites

You'd be hardpressed to come by a person who has never seen a picture of the cat who has been dubbed "Grumpy Cat" -- at least not one who has an Internet connection. In this article, we'll explore some of the most famous felines on the Internet and why people love them.

Grumpy Cat

Contrary to popular belief, Grumpy Cat is actually a girl! Her name is Tards, short for Tardar Sauce. She became an internet sensation after her photo was posted on the popular website Reddit in September of 2012. Grumpy Cat is still relatively young, turning a year old just a few days ago. Tards was born with feline dwarfism which is why she looks the way she does -- permanently grumpy. Even so, she is perfectly healthy and Grumy Cat's owners say that she acts just like a normal cat and is very happy, lovey, and cuddly.

So why do we love Tards so much? It must be because she is so unique! Grumpy Cat's own website can be found here.

Maru has been around the internet since 2007, when his own first launched the blog "I Am Maru". Maru is a male scottish fold cat who lives in Japan. Maru just loves to play, which is why he became so famous! He loves jumping into cardboard boxes... any cardboard box, no matter how big or small the size, which can result in some hilarity. His videos are extremely endearing and cute, which is why the Intenet loves him so much. His own youtube channel can be found here

Lil Bub

Lil Bub is a cat who loves sticking out her tongue. Perhaps the feline with the most credentials on this list, Lil Bub has her own movie (called Lil Bub and Friendz) coming out soon! She is a female house cat born with several genetic mutations causing dwarfism, polydactism, and a disformed lower jaw. She became famous after a YouTube video of her was posted in 2011. Lil Bub's blog can be found here.

I think an important lesson to take from this is that the world can still fall in love with an animal despite the fact that it may not be "perfect". Both Lil Bub and Grumpy Cat have genetic mutations and their owners -- and people all over the world -- still love them. Don't hesistate to adopt your own "imperfect" kitty at the shelter!

I just watched the Maru link you posted! Hilarity definitely ensued! What a smart cat! SOOO cute!

Maru is definitely one smart

Thanks for this useful information. I've been dying to hear more about grumpy cat, because I am a true fan. I have seen some Maru videos. I think he's on a computer commercial! Wow! I love how you inspired me in the end. I am already in love with these cats and your blog just made me more endeared to them. I'll definitely follow Lil Bub now. Thank you so much for this blog! It brought a huge smile to my face.

It's hard NOT to be in love
